Press Release
First Sunday Arts Kicks off July with Free Day of Entertainment – Sunday July 3rd, 2011 – Noon to 5pm
Sunday July 3rd the First Sunday Arts Festival returns to Calvert and West Streets in downtown Annapolis from noon to 5pm. This monthly free summer festival is expected to bring around 7,000 people each month to downtown Annapolis to be immersed in the arts.
The Streets and parks along Calvert and West streets at the July 3rd festival are filled with over 100 artisans, live music performances, magic shows, street performers and an international selection of outdoor cafes. The festival starts on Calvert street next to the Whitemore and Gotts parking garages and wraps around the block to West Street ending at Church Circle.
The entertainment schedule for the day includes Ashley Forrest from 1-3pm at Whitemore Park on Calvert Street. Having just completed recording the core of her debut country album titled CAN’T WAIT, 22-year old singer and songwriter Ashley Forrest has been performing throughout the mid-Atlantic region. Singing since she was three years old, Forrest’s genre flexibility and guitar acuity have made her popular with all age groups. Her performances are a must-see-n’hear for the entire family before she starts touring nationally in 2012.
Hailing from that quaint seaside sailing village in Maryland, Annapolis’ own “Ben’s Bones,” have been playing their exciting brand of acoustic rock at many of the area’s best clubs for over eight years. They’ve opened for well-known bands such as the Gin Blossoms, Jerry Jeff Walker, Dick Dale, The Presidents of the United States of America and The Church. Frontman Dan Haas has recorded with members of the Barenaked Ladies and Guster. Dan Haas with Ben’s Bones will be playing from Noon to -1:30 at Wiseman Park next to the visitors center.
Performance return to Weisman Park in the afternoon with the Tom Lagana Quartet. Tom Lagana is one of UMBC’s very own jazz instructor’s. Critics have been raving about his upcoming album release “Schematic” featuring George Garzone. Jazz fans are sure to line up to see them from 3:30 to 5pm.
Magic will be in the streets with The Magical Worlds of Jack Julius Live Stage and Illusion Show at 1pm next to Stan and Joes. Fear not if you miss this stage show as he will be strolling the streets and parks till 4pm showing off his magic tricks.
Plus for the early birds check out the indoor entertainment at Ramshead Tavern and 49 West Coffehouse both hosting a Jazz Brunch stating at 11am.
As always there is free parking for this event at the State Parking Garage on the corner of Calvert and Bladen Street, located just about a block away from the start of the festival. More information can always be found at www.firstsundayarts.com

Spring is in full swing, the leaves are returning on trees and the flowers are in bloom. This means its time for some of the first rites of spring in downtown Annapolis. May Day and First Sunday Arts festival on May 1st gives you 2 great reasons to bring out your friends and family to enjoy a spring day in downtown Annapolis.
These 2 Annapolis traditions are both family friendly and free. Plus there is free parking at the State Parking Garage on the corner of Calvert and Bladen Streets.
Bring your camera to capture the flower bouquets put out by business and residents all over downtown Annapolis, as they all compete to be the May Day Blue Ribbon winner. Stroll down West and Calvert streets and check out the First Sunday Arts festival. The May 1st festival features about 100 local and regional artists set up on the first blocks of West Street and under the trees along Calvert street next to the Whitemore Parking Garage.
Ready for some great outdoor spring entertainment. From noon-5pm The First Sunday Arts festival will be featuring free concerts by ASO Brass Quintet and Rob Levit Trio, arial dance by Studio 180 and the popular swing dancing group Gotta Swing returns with free Swing Dancing demos and free lessons on Calvert Street. Yes, there will be plenty of time for you to get your own swing dancing in, so bring your partner and prepare to have fun dancing to a great local Swing Band.
May 1st is a fun-filled, outdoor, free, family affair for all ages. And since West Street is closed to cars from Church Circle to Calvert Street during the Festival, several restaurants become outdoor cafes that are pet friendly and with perfect seating to watch the fun and people go by! Don’t Miss Annapolis the Fun @ First Sunday Art Festival … on October 3rd 2010
As we kick off the Fall October Fest season in Annapolis
October brings the much welcomed cooler weather and a number of outstanding outdoor activities to Annapolis. One of the first this month is the 2010 season’s final First Sunday Festival on October 3rd from noon until 5:00 p.m. During the five hours of festivities, West Street is closed to cars and becomes a fun-filled, outdoor, free, family affair of creativity for all ages to enjoy.
The street transforms and becomes a stage filled with live music, entertainment, and over 90 booths of art, jewelry, house wares, accessories and so much more. Plus several restaurants become outdoor cafes with perfect seating to watch the festivities, fun and people go by. So begin your October and fall season having fun in Annapolis by making the First Sunday Art Festivals part of your plans on October 3rd.
Live Entertainment on West Street …
- Viva Flamenco – an international dance company known for its performances of the Flamenco and other traditional dances. Will perform from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. in Stan and Joe’s side lot.
- Annapolis Dixieland Band – that plays traditional New Orleans Dixieland music plus swing and jazz will perform from noon until 1:30 p.m. in Wiseman Park.
- The Basement Band – with New York roots will perform its successful sound that ranges from rock influence to a country feel from 3:00 – 4:45 p.m. in Wiseman Park.
Around the Corner in Whitmore Park…
- The Brothers and Sisters –known for their range of music talent from rock & roll to contemporary country and blues will perform from noon to 1:30 p.m.
- Swing Dancing Fun – for longtime and first-time fans from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m.
- Craig Sparks Swingtet – performs from 2-3:30 p.m. providing live music for the dancers, and then the swing dancing fun continues with DJ-music accompaniment from 3:30 – 5:00 p.m.
The October 3rd First Sunday Arts Festival wraps it up for this year, but the Festival will return to Annapolis’ West and Calvert Streets in 2011 from May to October – on the first Sunday of each month.
