Join us in Annapolis, Maryland for the 2012 First Sunday Arts Festival on June 3. For five hours – from noon until five — a portion of historic West Street above State Circle is closed to cars and transforms into a fun festival of live music, Shakespeare, arts and crafts. The Festival, which continues around the corner into Whitmore Park, is free and a family affair for all ages. It’s the perfect place to enjoy an afternoon outdoors surrounded by talented performers, musicians, and over 100 booths of arts and crafts. Plus several of the West Street restaurants become outdoor cafes with perfect seating to watch the fun and people go by!

After a cold winter we are all excited that the warmer weather has finally arrived! And with it brings the 11th season of Annapolis’ Arts Festival which runs the first Sunday of each month from May through October. For five hours – from noon until five — a portion of historic West Street above State Circle is closed to cars and transformed into a fun festival of live music, dance, art and crafts. First Sunday Holiday Art Sale at Maryland Hall

First Sunday Arts has teamed up with Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts and Warner Brothers, who is releasing the movie Happy Feet Two, to create The First Sunday Holiday Art Sale at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts. “It’s time to add a November First Sunday event” says Erik Evans, the festival’s Marketing Director. ” Artists and guests have been asking for this for years. The public wants to buy unique and original locally-made gifts for the holiday season.”

Over 900 artists and crafters have showcased their work at the First Sunday Arts festivals over the past 10 years. Pam Godfrey Stevens, the Festival Coordinator, is hand-selecting artists to sell their work at the November 6th sale. The show will feature handcrafted jewelry, pottery, glass, wood-turning, children’s caps, clothing, feathery scaves, textiles, paintings, photography and more for sale. Attendees will also be able to visit the artists’ studios inside Maryland Hall, including Artist Patricia Tamariz, for additional holiday shopping.

“Combining the best Maryland Hall artists’ work with the best of the First Sunday Arts makes sense for a Holiday Show,” says Linnell Bowen President of Maryland Hall.”The public will have a great opportunity at this event to purchase high-quality locally made gifts.” Having an Annapolis Art and Craft Sale at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts also gives the public the chance to see our Maryland Hall’s new art exhibit in the Chaney Gallery, called “Handmade Textiles: Past and Present.” In addition, Plus the Maryland Hall Box Office will be open for the public to get buy tickets at to see some of this fall and winter’s best local performances and shows.”

To top off the day there will be free musical entertainment and artist demonstrations all day long. The entertainment schedule is:

Noon to 1:15 – Tom Lagana – Jazz/classical guitarist
1:45 to 3:15 – Anastasia Pike – harpist from Peabody Preparatory
3:45 to 5:00 – Mike Noonan – Jazz pianist
Noon to 5:00 – Demonstations of lace making, crochet, hand spining of wool, knitting, rug hooking and weaving on the loom.

For the kids, Warner Brothers Studios is flying in from Hollywood your favorite Penquins from the Sequel to the Academy Award®-winning animated hit Happy Feet. So bring the kids and your camera for a chance to have your picture taken with these stars.

The First Sunday Holiday ArtSale is Sunday, November 6th from noon to 5pm at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts at 801 Chase Street Annapolis Maryland 21401. Sunday October 2nd is the Grand Finale of Downtown Annapolis Street Festivals for the 2011 season with the First Sunday Arts Oktoberfest Festival. As usual Calvert and West Streets in downtown Annapolis will be filled with over 100 local and regional artists and crafters selling everything handcrafted you can imagine from wheel thrown pottery, hand-blown glass, wood turned bowls, handcrafted jewelery, photography, paintings and more. The galleries of West Street will also be opening their fall exhibits of local artists during the festival. Plus the international cafes and food vendors are ready to give you your first fall taste of Oktoberfest delights including funnel cakes, and knock wursts and the resturants back patios will serve as your beer garden as you enjoy seasonal fall harvest beers. These are just some of the popular flavors you will also find at this fun fall street festival on Calvert and West streets.

The festival is also packed with a wide variety of free top notch entertainment that will bring out thousands of locals to enjoy the day in downtown Annapolis. The day starts at noon at the Long and Foster Stage near the Annapolis Visitors Center on West Street with the Annapolis Dixieland Band playing fun traditional New Orleans Dixieland music. They will be followed by The Basement Band starting at 3:30pm with thier tribute to the music of Bob Dylan and The Band.

The performance area between Stan and Joe’s and Back Creek Books will be hosting Chris Clark Bicycle Stunt Show at 1:45 and 3pm. Over the past decade Chris has performed at Times Square in NYC, The Gravity Games, NFL Games, The Olympic Games and at over 40 venues on the Vans Warped Tour, entertaining thousands of fans. The show is a breathtaking display of balance and agility as Clark maneuvers his bike and body over his custom built ramps and obstacles. Once you see this performance you will have a renewed appreciate for this extreme sport. Chris Clark will be available for autographs after the shows.

Whitemore Park on Calvert street will be hosting 2 of the biggest performances of the day. Starting at 2pm the Gotta Swing dancers being lead by the Craig Sparks Swingtet take to the stage. For all those that enjoying watching swing dancing on the popular Dancing with the Stars television show, here is your chance to see this fun and energetic dance style in person. There will also be a free public mini dance lesson to those that want to get a taste of swing dancing. For those that already enjoy swing dancing you are invited to join in the fun with the public swing dancing session sponsored by gottaswing.com

The grand finale of the day starts at 4pm at Whitemore Park with the fabulous Footworks Percussive Dance Ensemble. They perform a uniquely American story: an exuberant fusion of live music, comedy, singing, and a dazzling array of percussive dance forms rooted in different cultures. Since 1979, Footworks has represented American culture internationally, including a Smithsonian Institution tour of Japan, and as guest artists with Riverdance in London. This high energy performance will leave you breathless and craving all winter for the return of next years First Sunday Arts Festivals.

As always friendly pets are welcome and there is plenty of free parking for those attending First Sunday Arts about 2 blocks from the festival at the State Parking Garage on the corner of Calvert and Bladen Streets and low cost parking at the 2 garages at the festival on Calvert Street. We suggest that you arrive early and early and enjoy the Sunday Morning Festival Brunches at Rams Head Tavern, Stan and Joe’s Saloon and 49 West Coffehouse.

First Sunday Arts festivals in downtown Annapolis knows how to make a weekend fun and this Labor Day weekend is no exception. This Sunday September 4th the areas around Calvert and West Streets will be transformed into a festival zone. The streets and parks will be filled with over 100 artists and crafters, live music, dance, and cafe dining. Plus there will be the Labor Day Parade going right through the festival on Calvert Street and the festival is adding a food row on Calvert Street for funnel cakes, nachos, popcorn, Italian sausage, cookies, corn dogs, snow cones, lemonade and fried twinkies. Plus check out the Chicken Shack behind Level on the corner of West Street and City Gate Lane.
